What are the best films about film making?

January 27, 2010 - 10:29 pm 1 Comment

I wish to start making short low budget films as soon as I graduate.
I want to know what are some Essential books to buy?

I’d recommend you see Richard Linklater’s ‘Slacker’ and pick up one of the Guerilla Filmmaker’s handbooks. Try Youtube for practical advice.

Also, William Goldman’s ‘Adventures in the Screentrade’ is great at expounding the screenwriter’s craft. ‘The Conversations’ by Michael Ondaatje and Walter Murch is a fantastic book about film and sound editing. Both books are about and by established figures in the trade but aim high I say!

Do you prefer big hollywood movies or smaller indie films?

January 27, 2010 - 10:28 pm 3 Comments

I prefer indie films, because indie films still feel like real movies to me. They still care about story, acting, direction, cinematography ETC…everything that makes a movie!

Whereas big hollywood pictures just spit shit out to make money, dont get me wrong there is maybe a handful of big movies a year, but the majority do suck.

You?

If I had to choose, I would prefer independent films to blockbusters. Mainly for the same reasons that you already indicated. Indie films concentrate on the story and acting more because they don’t have the money for special effects. But all a good movie needs is a good story, good acting, and good direction.

Nowadays, it’s actually harder to make a good big budget film because of all the distractions caused by the special effects and all the money to play with. Just look at Transformers… not that Michael Bay was ever a brilliant director, but he was caught with a whole lot of money in the budget and sort of forgot there was a story to tell in 2 1/2 hours. But then give the big budget to someone like Peter Jackson and he’ll make gold.

That’s the main reason why the Oscar’s Best Picture nominees have been dominated by independent films. Not because the critics and the public prefer different films. It’s because special effects is usually a distraction for big budget films and it makes it twice as hard for a filmmaker to really focus on the story and not the explosions.

Are there any Bollywood films featuring a romance between a Hindu and a Muslim?

January 27, 2010 - 10:28 pm 17 Comments

I’ve not seen that many Bollywood films, but one thing that has always struck me is that they often present a fairly idyllic vision of Indian society, with harmonious intercaste and interreligious friendships and communities. But I don’t believe I’ve ever seen a film which centres on a romance between two people of different religions. Are there any such films?

Not only are there films featuring romance between a Hindu and a Muslim, there are a number of real cases where a Hindu and a Muslim have gone on to marry. One recent high-profile example is the marriage of actor Suriya, a Hindu, with fellow actor Jyotika, a Muslim.

A good film is Mani Ratnam’s Bombay. Far from showing an idyllic vision of interreligious harmony, the movie revolves around the Hindu-Muslim romance of the lead pair and the difficulties they face during the Hindu / Muslim riots of 1993 on Bombay, India. It is a touching movie with a superb soundtrack as well.
