@DistinguishedFlyer …
@DistinguishedFlyer Well I’ve seen some films with scores of 7.9 go on their top 250 list,but they’re usually at the end of the list and go on and off ocasionally.
Eight – you’re …
Eight – you’re right. It used to be on the IMDb’s Top 250, but dropped off a few years back; too bad. It’s probably my all-time top film, so I definitely recommend it.
@DistinguishedFlyer …
@DistinguishedFlyer I just checked,it was 8 nominations,and it’s got a 7.9 on IMDB.That’s good enough for me.I better start looking for it.
Yes (nine), …
Yes (nine), including Picture and Supporting for Sam Shepard. It won four technical prizes. It’s the kind of big epic that the Academy often likes, but it tanked at the box office.
@DistinguishedFlyer …
@DistinguishedFlyer Did The Righ Stuff get any Oscar nominations?
It’s mainly about …
It’s mainly about the beginnings of the US space program, and the test pilot programs that preceded it. You should also check out the original book by Tom Wolfe.

That’s for sure! Apocalypse Now obviously deserved it, but The Black Stallion should have been nominated!!! Oh well, the Oscars are wrong 90% of the time anyway…..
Unfortunately it …
Unfortunately it wasn’t even nominated – Apocalypse Now (the winner) provided some tough competition, though.

@DistinguishedFlyer
That’s Ebert for you! Haha….
The Black Stallion really is a great film though….I mean, the fact that it starts out with about a half-hour or more of scenes with no dialogue is stunning for a movie of its genre!
Also the cinematography is some of the best I’ve ever seen…..If anything deserves an Oscar it is Caleb Deschanel for that cinematography!!

OOPS! Correct the ‘any amazingly….’ etc to AN amazingly etc….haha it actually makes a big difference
Interesting that …
Interesting that you should say that – years later (after he had chosen Raging Bull as the decade’s best movie, while he had placed it at #2 for the year) he said that often when he is torn between two or three candidates for the year’s #1 spot he picks the less likely choice.

@Beale64
I was very surprised by Ebert’s pick of The Black Stallion! That is why he’s a great critic, is he chooses any amazingly overlooked ‘family’ film that is actually an exceptional movie..
It didn’t play in …
It didn’t play in Chicago until 1980, so he didn’t see it in time for it to place on his 1979 list. The Deer Hunter placed on their 1979 lists for the same reason.
It’s just something …
It’s just something that came with my computer.
I’ve always …
I’ve always wondered why “The Black Stallion” topped Ebert’s best-of-’80 list. That film was released the year before.
