what is the best codec to download films that will play?

i have a windows vista premium laptop,but not sure if i have a codec inistalled already onit,what is the best codec that can make my films i try and make playable?

I use VLC media player as it plays everything.

    It depends on which codec was used to encode the film you have downloaded in the first palce. You will need the same codec that was used to encode it to decode/play it.

    If you are going to make films and encode them yourself, for others to watch, then the most playable format is going to be WMV. Since the vast majority of computers run Windows they will be able to play WMV straight off without any further action.

    There may be more technically better formats around now like mp4 but you cannot guarantee that everyone will have a suitable codec installed on their computer.
