Why Do 99% of Bollywood Films Have Singing And Dancing In Them?

I know 99% is an exaggeration but i’ve only ever seen one Indian film which didn’t just suddenly go into a mass singing and dancing routine.

Why do they seem to focus so much on musical type films?

Because their standard of true emotional character based acting is still very low. Their acting schools and precedence for their acting talent are mostly shipped overseas if they show promise.

Now I will try not to be patronising, but in countries where the education level is low such as India, Africa, Cambodia etc at least 80% of the films they make are musically styled since this panders to the populous’ lack of understanding of film concepts and intelligent polt lines. They would lose interest.

Thailand is probably an example of moving away from this, with a burgeoning film industry that is slowly seperating itself from the now unfashinable muscially based films.

True, most of those are martial arts based (the most famous being ONG BAK) yet 40 years ago that was exactly how the Chinese broke away from their musical based films, so the light is there. Although the Chinese still do make martial arts they are stylised and they have a growing trend of well respected plot based character films.

India isn’t there yet but it will be.

Because a long, long time ago, before I can remember…Originality died, some people don’t try as others hard to resurrect it, and therefore produce the same movies, one after another.

Because of the demands of the viewing public. People who watch Bollywood films do so for the singing and dancing and some superb acting is always a bonus.
