The 120 Greatest Films Ever Made

April 1, 2010 - 7:21 pm 25 Comments

This list is not necessarily a list of my favourite films, it is not a list of the movies I like the most. Rather, the films you see here are those I think serve the title best, as the greatest films ever made. However, the reasoning I have done to compile this list and judge the movies of the world, have (of course) been highly subjective and a victim of personal taste. Also, I have not seen every movie in this world; and when compiling such a list as this, one must prioritize some films over other.

The choices I have made is open to debate. That’s why there is a comment section, but please, leave a sensible reply, not some hateful message or for instance “Oh, Goodfellas should be #1 !!!” If you do not ad an explanation to your opinion, I will not take it as anything but an insult. I love discussing films, so let us discuss, not brag or fight or be arrogant.

I made this list to kill time, I must admit. I took some hard working, but it’s been a delight, especially as motivation to watch great and classic films. I hope you’ll enjoy this list, and I also hope you’ll find some of your own favourites in there, or maybe someone new! I will be bold enough to say that every films in this list should appeal to those who love cinema. The intention of the list is therefore to give recommendations, and I would like to get recommendations back. Thank you for watching, and for reading this description if you actually did! :)

I’m not sure why the video turned out this choppy. The file I uploaded was perfectly alright and matched YouTube’s recommendations. Anyway, I hope you’ll bear with it and watch the video through! :)

Music used:
Basil Poledouris The Search (from Conan the Barbarian)
Vangelis Across the Mountains (from Alexander)

There are however a number of films which I have later discovered and that certainly deserves a spot in the list. Among these are: Dersu Uzala, Ivan’s Childhood, It’s a Wonderful Life, The Tragedy of Othello (Welles), Army in the Shadows, Andrei Rublev, M, There Will Be Blood, The Hidden Fortress, Battleship Potemkin, Closely Watched Trains, The Big Sleep, The Apartment, Network, Double Indemnity, and Rear Window. Dersu Uzala and Army in the Shadows has already become one of my very favourites. And I almost forgot Alphaville, that film is quite superb! Seems like I have to make a new list soon …

Especially “Stalker” at no.2. Not that I particularly disliked the film but even being in the top half of this list is a bit vexing.
A suggestion being: More modern classics i.e. Memento or Lost in Translation perhaps.
    Anyway sweet list!

You have had a couple of funny movies there, but for the most part your list was mostly serious movies.
I think there are more funny/silly movies out there that could warrant to be on your list.

Also, I didn’t see Terminator 2, probably the best action movie ever made. And probably the only movie to use CG well.

i have a recommendation, a couple at least. Pan’s labyrinth, American beauty, Saving Private Ryan, and American History X. They’re pretty new films and i understand that for a film to be, “Great” it has to endure many years of criticism, and I’m not saying these should be top ten, but maybe a much higher (number-wise, not place-wise) spot on the list. I promise, in years these films will be looked back upon and always remember as classics, maybe in a couple decades.
