Why do old films have white flickers all over the screen?

I was watching an old film and noticed there are flickers all over the screen. Both white and black flickers, sometimes blob-like ones too.
Why are old films like that?

Its the re-fresh rate between each image. If you take an old tube TV and take a tape of it and watch it you will see the same thing but the new ones have such a fast re-fresh rate that it is impossible to see by the human eye.
