Road, Movie, termed as the Indian Cinema Paradiso, has been officially invited for a world premiere as a special presentation at The Toronto International Film Festival, 2009.

Vishnu (Abhay Deol), a restless young man, itches to escape his father’s faltering hair oil business.

An old truck beckons, which Vishnu sees as his ticket to freedom. He offers to drive the antique Chevy across the desert to the sea, where it has been sold to a local museum. As he sets off across the harsh terrain of desert India, he discovers hes not merely transporting a battered vehicle but an old touring cinema.

Along the way, Vishnu reluctantly picks up a young runaway (Mohammed Faizal Usmani), a wandering old entertainer (Satish Kaushik) and a striking gypsy woman (Tannishtha Chatterjee – Brick Lane). Together they roam the barren land, searching for water and an elusive fair. The journey turns dire when they are waylaid by corrupt cops and a notorious waterlord.

The key to their freedom is the eccentric collection of films and the two forty-year-old film projectors in the back of the truck. As in 1001 Nights, if the films are good, they live and move on. If the films are boring, they face death in the outback.

The journey proves transformative for each of the travelers, but especially for Vishnu who discovers life, love and laughter on the Indian highway.

Produced by the US-based Ross Katz and Susan B. Landau, and presented by The Indian Film Company and Studio 18, the script of the Dev Benegal-directed feature was an official selection at L’Atelier du Cannes in 2006.

Road, Movie (in Hindi) is India’s first breakthrough feature at TIFF’09 – an official selection that will have a world premiere at The Winter Garden Theatre on September 18.

Kaminey (Hindi: कमीने, translation: Scoundrels) is a 2009 Bollywood film directed by Vishal Bhardwaj featuring Shahid Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra in the lead roles. Bhardwaj co-authored the screenplay to a script he bought for $4000 from a Kenyan writer named Cajetan Boy whom he had mentored at a script writing workshop in Uganda.[1] The film was produced by Ronnie Screwvala of UTV Motion Pictures.

Guddu and Charlie (Shahid Kapoor in a double role) are identical twins who have grown up in the streets of Mumbai. Both brothers have a speech impediment Charlie has a lisp, while Guddu stutters in his speech.

Cast

Shahid Kapoor as Charlie Sharma and Guddu Sharma. While Charlie is a bookie at horse-racing and lisps, Guddu works for an NGO for AIDS awareness and stammers. Initially, Saif Ali Khan caused the controversy that the role was initially offered to him and eventually went to Kapoor. Later, Saif sent an apology to Shahid, to which Shahid replied, “If he has said something like that I appreciate it. I have always said that he is a very senior actor. He has been around for much longer than me.”
Priyanka Chopra as Sweety Shekhar Bhope, sister of underworld don, Sunil Shekhar Bhope, and love interest and pregnant with child of Guddu. Priyanka Chopra was initially reluctant to sign up, as she expected that movie would belong to double role playing Shahid Kapoor, but Vishal Bhardwaj convinced her as a challenge. Priyanka Chopra admitted that being a Punjabi girl herself, it was tough to play a simple Maharastrian in the movie. Being a middle-class, college-going girl, she wore minimal make-up.
Amol Gupte as Sunil Shekhar Bhope (Bhope Bhau), a Maharashtrian mafioso with political ambition. Amole Gupte had previously done minor acting assignments, including Ketan Mehta’s Holi. Initially when called up for the role, based on his previous acting jobs, he thought it to be a joke, but subsequently accepted the role.
