Horror movie fans: What are your top 5 cult horror films of all time?

February 1, 2010 - 7:15 am 9 Comments

As the question asks guys and girls, which horrors do you class as your cult faves? You don’t need to list them in any order, just what your top five are :o ) and if you have more than 5, you should list them aswell so we can get a good range of cult titles!!

My top 5 would have to be (again in no order):

The Shining
Nightmare On Elm Street (original)
Halloween (1978 original)
Evil Dead
The Amityville Horror (original)

Braindead
Evil Dead 2
Cube
Dawn of the Dead (original)
Hellraiser

Apart from Evil Dead, none of those are cult movies. They’re all mainstream Hollywood horrors.

Here are my top 5 horror films:

HONORABLE MENTIONS: FRIDAY THE 13TH, QUARANTINE, THE SIXTH SENSE, PSYCHO, HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL *shudders*

#5: Stephen King’s It – OK, I can have one impulsive pick on my list, can’t I? Well, whatever, this movie still scares me and many other clown-phobes. Tim Curry gives the performance of his career here in the role of Pennywise the Clown, and the movie rests on his shoulders. Sure, the effects are cheesy, but it’s Curry’s performance that really stands out. This movie is the reason I hate clowns, and I’m sure I’m not alone.

#4: The Ring – This film is living proof that not all Hollywood remakes have to be horrible. Sure, the Ring has innumerable "jump" moments that really don’t belong, but the story is original, the acting is above par all things considered, and the scares really are legitimate. This is one exception to the rule that the original is better, because in my opinion, the Ring > Ringu. Go ahead and flame me, fanboys!

#3: The Shining – I put this one on the list solely because I love Kubrick films. Plus, this is my favorite performance by Jack Nicholson, and I’m a huge fan of the original Batman! The film has such a creepy atmosphere, and the ending is so bizarre and twisted that it kept me up for weeks. Sure, the film paved the way for many horrible plot twists in stupid PG-13 horror flicks, but ignoring those abominations, the Shining

#2: Saw – The only real reason I watch the Saw sequels is because I love the first one so much. No Saw sequel will ever stack up to the original, because the first one really changed horror, whether the haters will admit it or not. Critics will point out all the flaws with this movie, but if you ignore some of the brainless moments, this really is a very creepy movie and is more than deserving of a spot on this list. Plus, Westley of the Princess Bride cuts his own foot off!

#1: Dawn of the Dead (1976) – This was the first real "horror" movie I watched, and it still scares the heck out of me to this day! The zombies were gruesome, and the mall setup led to some very interesting and unforgettable scenes, such as the climax of the film, with Tom Savini giving a dementedly hilarious performance. And for the record, I love 300 and Watchmen, but Zack Snyder should have STAYED AWAY from doing a remake to this film. It really is timeless, and is the definitive horror movie of any collection.

P.S. Am I the only one who thinks the video game Fatal Frame could be a VERY SCARY movie if it falls into the right hands? The idea lends itself perfectly to a movie.
