Why is Lincoln always depicted wearing a top hat in films etc.?

A lot of the photographs or daguerreotypes of him don’t show him wearing one.

Besides the fact that it was a popular hat of the day, it just became the image of Lincoln as he was very tall for his day and then he would wear this tall hat.

It was a common hat of that period. I believe Lincoln use to carry important papers in his hat so his hands would be free.

It’s become a symbol for him — if a tall man in a black suit and stovepipe hat shows up, the audience automatically thinks "Lincoln."
